PRESS RELEASE
Spring Meeting from 18-21 May 2023 in Baden-Baden - Iffezheim:
Romina with enormous "power" - mare is the "hit" in Tattersalls Diana trial
As a hit duo, Al Bano and Romina Power were highly successful for many years. And the three-year-old mare named after Romina Power from the Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Stables seems to be on the verge of a great career. In the Diana Trial (List race, 25,000 Euros, 1,00 m), sponsored for the first time by the auction house Tattersalls, an important test for the Henkel - Prize of Diana on August 6 in Düsseldorf, the Le Havre daughter, prepared by Michael Figge in Munich, landed a surprise victory at odds of 21.8:1 on Saturday in Baden-Baden-Iffezheim in front of 8,900 spectators.
After a perfectly timed ride by Frenchman Augustin Madamet, Romina Power never let an opponent get close to her from the lead. Ever new reserves decided the game in her favor well before the finish line ahead of the still strongly trailing Keziah from France and Taiora (one day license suspension for jockey Eduardo Pedroza). The clear favorite Philaminte did not get beyond eighth place.
Jockey Augustin Madamet: "My mare galloped very relaxed and accelerated enormously. The ground also suited her very well."
Trainer Michael Figge, who later followed up with Aguna's (Marie Gast) success in an amateur ride, commented: "The stay in Cagnes had done her a lot of good. Romina Power already had a rest of condition from there. We are very happy, she liked the good ground. I have regular contact with Romina Power, I keep her informed about the mare."
Emir dominates the BBAG Baden Youth Prize
Emir reigns supreme among the youngsters - this is how one could paraphrase the result in the first race for the two-year-old horses. Because Emir, trained by Mario Hofer in Krefeld for Cologne Renn-Verein President Eckhard Sauren, brilliantly lived up to his role as 2.5:1 favorite in the BBAG Badener Jugendpreis (10,000 euros, 1,000 m).
Early on in the home stretch, Eduardo Pedroza pulled away from the competition with the Millowitsch son, whom Sauren had purchased for 40,000 euros at the BBAG yearling auction, led by Sunshine Girl ahead of local hero Gina's Lion. It was an impressive performance by Emir, whose further career one can be more than curious about.
"He stopped his work performance. At the auction he already looked picture-perfect, which is why I even went over my price limit at the time," Eckhard Sauren told us. Trainer Mario Hofer added: "He is a very good horse, Emir had worked twice faster, I had already liked that very much. Possibly we are now heading for Italy with him."
Jockey Eduardo Pedroza revealed, "The horse was excellently prepared. A very good looking stallion with a great canter."
Great day for Eckhard Sauren
Only the Brave (5.5:1) made a great day for owner Eckhard Sauren in an 18,000 euro Equalization I over 2,000 meters perfect. For the former Group winner from the Cologne quarters of Henk Grewe was easily ahead with Lukas Delozier against the Iffezheim representative Havoc and Lion's Head.
Sensational result
The first four-race event, a 1,400-meter Equalizer III, ended with a sensation. High Flight, piloted by Patrick Gibson for Munich trainer Werner Glanz, beat training companion Wynono as well as Lady Calcaria and Repute at odds of 30.5:1. The four-way bet was not met.
The betting turnover in the eight races amounted to 548,492.14 euros.
Grand finale on Sunday
The grand finale at the Spring Meeting will take place on Sunday, May 21, with eleven races (first start at 11:20 am). The Grand Prix of the Badische Wirtschaft (Group II, 70,000 euros, 2,200 m) with Grand Prix horses of the German turf is in the center.
