Big week from 27 August-04 September 2022 in Baden-Baden - Iffezheim:
The "sun shines" for the old jockey champion - Andreas Helfenbein triumphs with Alaskasonne in the 67th Prize of the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe
Baden-Baden/Iffezheim, August 27, 2022 (MH). Once again, the veteran jockey showed it to all the others - Andreas Helfenbein, with his 55 years the veteran among the German saddle artists succeeded in front of 6,150 spectators in the 67th Prize of the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe (Group III, 55,000 euros, 2,000 m) on Saturday at the start of the Great Week at the racecourse in Baden-Baden-Iffezheim on the four-year-old Soldier Hollow daughter Alaskasonne, prepared by Markus Klug in Cologne-Heumar, a big surprise.
After a tactical race, which was almost obvious with five starters, Helfenbein kept sparking new reserves on the gray mare, who had attracted the least attention at 10:1 odds on the tote. With a lead of two and three-quarters of a length, Alaskasonne took her first Group win and prize money of 32,000 euros.
The fourth goal in the 13th start was already certain well before the finish, because Andreas Helfenbein had timed everything perfectly. In the German Derby, he had ridden Schwarzer Peter, who was only beaten after the finish photo, and who finished third with Andrasch Starke behind Mansour, who never let up. Queroyal and Lord Charming, on the other hand, declined.
VOTES:
Andreas Helfenbein (Alaskasonne's jockey): "I have known the mare for one and a half years from daily training. She is not easy and sometimes behaves like a tap dancer, but we have adjusted well to each other. Today we were able to control everything in front.
Markus Klug (trainer of Alaskasonne and Schwarzer Peter): "With five horses a lot depended on the tactics, it was a super ride by Andreas Helfenbein, who served Alaskasonne everything in the best way in the front and dragged the pace. On the straight Alaskasonne made the decisive move. She had already proven many times that she could also handle the stallions in this class. The group win was our main goal, so she stayed in the racing stable. At the end of the year she will go into breeding. Black Peter could have used more speed."
Michael Cadeddu (jockey of Mansour): "He ran very well after the small break, although I had hoped for more speed. The mare in front was out of reach."
Pavel Vovcenko (Mansour's coach): "More pace would have been better for us, but he kept pulling."
Andreas Wöhler (trainer of Queroyal): "Eddie Pedroza said he couldn't cope with the ground, which I hadn't thought before."
Reginald Count of Norman (owner of Lord Charming): "We have no explanation because he had a dream race. It was his worst performance so far."
