Press release:
Spring Meeting from 26-29 May 2022 in Baden-Baden - Iffezheim:
Reunion with Arc winner Torquator Tasso - Many gallop cracks named for the top races - Baden Galopp with eleven race days in 2022
Baden-Baden/Iffezheim, April 12, 2022 (MH). In six weeks, the second racing season under the management of Baden Galopp will start at the racecourse in Baden-Baden-Iffezheim. With eleven racing days, the operator will offer a "complete racing year" again for the first time in 2022. Around 2.6 million euros will be paid out in total in racing prizes and bonuses. The season will open with the Spring Meeting. The Great Week will comprise five event days. The Sales & Racing Festival with two race days in October and the Winterzauber race day on December 3, scheduled for the first time, round off the racing season.
Three group and three list races
With three group and three list races, the sporting value is already very high at the spring meeting. After the extended entry deadline for the top highlights today, April 12, all turf fans can look forward to many stars of the German turf scene, but also quite a few prominent guests from abroad.
Kronimus Badener Meile with international line-up
The 44th Kronimus Badener Meile starts the round of group races. The Iffezheim concrete block company Kronimus has been supporting the racecourse for decades and acts as a partner of the Group II test over the distance of 1,600 meters, which is endowed with 70,000 euros.
Trained by Carina Fey in France, Manjeer, who recently ran strongly several times in top races in Dubai, is one of several guests. The Englishman Ed Walker named no less than three horses, including Stormy Antarctic, who won the Baden Mile in 2018.
With Rubaiyat, the "Galopper of the Year 2019" is also in the line-up, as is the mare Novemba, who in 2021 under Sibylle Vogt ensured the first triumph for an Amazon in a German gallop classic (German 1,000 Guineas), and Mythico, who in 2021 took the stallion equivalent with the Mehl-Mülhens-Rennen and just secured the Kalkmann Spring Mile in Düsseldorf against Rubaiyat. A total of 20 horses were entered.
This highlight will be framed by the Prize of the Baden-Baden Hotel & Catering Industry (list race, 25,000 euros, 2,200 meters) and a top handicap (equalization I) over 2,000 meters. Nine races have been announced for the premiere day of the Spring Meeting.
Important tests for German Derby and Prize of Diana
The second day of racing is dominated by the most important classic races of the year. The Spring Prize - Derby Trial (Group III, 55,000 euros, 2,000 m) is a milestone on the way to the IDEE 153rd German Derby on July 3 in Hamburg.
29 candidates received a nomination. Among others, the Cologne trainer Peter Schiergen made a commitment to Tünnes, who currently leads the long-term betting markets of the betting providers. The winner of the Duke of Ratibor race in Krefeld is none other than the half-brother of Torquator Tasso. Tünnes belongs to Holger Renz, an ambulance entrepreneur living in Cologne and Baden-Baden.
The trainers Markus Klug and Henk Grewe provide the strongest contingents with 7 and 6 horses respectively.
The focus for the 3-year-old mares is on the Baden Racing Diana Trial (list race, 25,000 euros, 1,800 m). Rehearsals will also be held here for a classic, the Henkel - Preis der Diana - Deutsches Stutenderby (Group I, 500,000 euros on August 7 in Düsseldorf.
High tension before the season debut of the Arc winner
The most important race of the spring meeting will be held on Sunday, May 29 - the Grand Prix of the Baden Economy. 18 horses have been entered for the Group II event over 2,200 meters, which carries a purse of 70,000 euros. Here, the aforementioned Arc winner Torquator Tasso is scheduled to make his highly anticipated first start since his Paris triumph in October 2021. With the Derby runner-up Alter Adler, the Union winner Best of Lips, the two Stall Salzburg aces Mendocino and Quest the Moon (winner of this test in 2020), further top German horses have been engaged.
Class sprinters meet in the Silver Whip (list race, 25,000 euros, 1,200 m). In the Baden Youth Prize (12,000 euros, 1,000 m), two-year-old youngsters will compete for the first time in 2022. Two-legged youngsters will also get a chance on the final day. The 10 races will also include a run for the Mehl-Mülhens Foundation Youngsters' Prize. Trainees and riders with fewer than 50 victories who have not yet reached the age of 30 may take part.
Stephan Buchner, managing partner of Baden Galopp: "We are very satisfied with the entry results and expect a high quality spring meeting, of course with Torquator Tasso as the absolute shining light. Incidentally, we will also have a lot to offer our guests in the supporting program. On the family day, the 26.05. as well as on the 28.05. we will organize an After-Race-Party with live music directly after the last race. On Thursday in our Beach Area and on Saturday in a newly created Chill Out Zone in the Gontard Garden. We will announce details about this in due time."
Race prices significantly increased
Important note to all trainers and owners: Baden Galopp has significantly increased the race prices for 2022. The races for two-year-old winless horses will be endowed with at least 10,000 euros and for the three-year-old horses with at least 9,000 euros. This means that Baden Galopp is on average 30% above the minimum prize money set by Deutscher Galopp. Significantly higher race prices will also be paid in the handicaps. Thus, the equalization IV will be endowed with 8,000 euros, the equalization III with 10,000 euros, the equalization II with 14,000 euros and the equalization I with 20,000 euros.
