What a day for Stefan Hahne in Iffezheim: Turlow is followed by Daydream Express
Baden-Baden-Iffezheim, October 18, 2024 (MH) – Breeder and owner Stefan Hahne from Vallendar is unlikely to forget the opening Friday of the Sales & Racing Festival at the racetrack in Baden-Baden-Iffezheim anytime soon. That’s because he celebrated two victories: one with Turlow in a Youngster race and another with Daydream Express in the Ausgleich I.
Turlow justified the immense trust placed in him
Promising young racehorses were likely on display in the opening 1,400-meter race, as Stefan Hahne’s Turlow (B. Murzabayev) fully lived up to his status as the heavy 1.6:1 favorite, even though he had to battle harder than expected against the underdog Daquan, who put up a valiant fight.
Daydream Express is once again leaving everyone in the dust
“He’d been showing promise over the past two or three weeks. We’ll see where he goes from here,” reported trainer Peter Schiergen, who had entered a horse for Stefan Hahne for the first time. Turlow is a son of the legendary stallion Soldier Hollow, who passed away too soon. Kolumban, the hope of the Turf Syndicate Baden-Baden, impressed greatly in third place; the same goes for Pershing, another representative from Iffezheim who tied for fourth with Kelani, though he had squandered some opportunities early in the race.
Hahne’s second victory came in the Ausgleich I, a 1,800-meter race with a purse of 20,000 euros, when Daydream Express (5.2:1) from Henk Grewe’s Cologne stable decisively defeated the underdogs Muhalif and Lightning Jock. The fifth victory of the season for the four-year-old Kingman daughter was an impressive performance. Winning jockey Stefanie Koyuncu said, “I’d already won with her once before in Krefeld. Even back then, I knew she was a racehorse. Today she proved it.”
Mathayl, too, is making the betting favorites happy
In a race for three-year-olds, too, the favorites prevailed, but even Mathayl—the 2.1:1 favorite from Andreas Wöhler’s successful stable in Spexard—had to work hard in a 2,200-meter race against Oak Lahoma and Anno Vego to narrowly secure the first win of his career. Jaber Abdullah, a major owner based in Dubai, has been having several racehorses trained here in Germany for many years.
“I was sure we’d won,” jockey Eduardo Pedroza admitted. “I thought it would be easier, but the mare slowed down a bit in the middle of the stretch—but it all worked out in the end.”
A Lucky Find in the Netherlands
The Dutch guest Done Decision has turned out to be an absolute steal. The gelding, trained by Romy van der Meulen for her father Lucien—who had already made a name for himself here at the Grosse Woche—secured his fourth win of the season in a 1,600-meter Ausgleich III race (part of the T. von Zastrow Handicap Series) with a purse of 20,000 euros. With Thore Hammer-Hansen—currently number one in the jockey standings—at the reins, the 10.6:1 longshot pulled away early from Switsch, Donna Helma, and Freigeist. The four-horse exacta paid 10,223.3:1 euros.
Bauyrzhan Murzabayev at least partially made up for his second-place finish with Dhitjari in the Ferdinand Leisten Memorial when he guided Christian Sprengel’s Sporting Hunter (9.2:1) to a comfortable victory over Red Nugget and Aguna in a 1,600-meter handicap race.
Bauyrzhan Murzabayev and Peter Schiergen even secured their third win of the day in the final 2,400-meter Handicap III race, as Ibicenca (3.3:1) from Schlenderhan finished well ahead of Mount Everest, Almenkönig, and Emmeci. The four-horse wager paid out 383.1:1 euros.
Substantial Increase in Revenue
In the seven races held on Friday, betting turnover totaled 321,458.97 euros. That represents a 17 percent increase compared to 2023. Following the race day, the BBAG’s fall auction began and will continue on Saturday.
Season finale on Sunday with two major highlights
The grand 2024 season finale at the Baden-Baden-Iffezheim racetrack will take place on Sunday, October 20. Highlights of the nine races include the Carla Kellner Future Race – Winter Queen’s Prize (Group III, 155,000 euros, 1,600 m) and the Baden Galopp Fall Trophy (Group III, 55,000 euros, 2,400 m).
