Big Week from August 27 - September 04, 2022 in Baden-Baden - Iffezheim:
Five days of top-class sport at the Great Week in Baden-Baden-Iffezheim
Baden-Baden/Iffezheim, August 23, 2022 (MH). Top gallopers such as Arc hero and last year's winner Torquator Tasso and Derby winner Sammarco in the 152nd Wettstar.de Grosser Preis von Baden and many other four-legged cracks over five days of racing and an attractive supporting program - the 2022 Grand Week under the direction of Baden Galopp will captivate fans of horse racing. From Saturday, August 27 to Sunday, September 4, class horses from Germany and abroad will meet at the racecourse in Baden-Baden-Iffezheim. And on Friday, September 2, the gallop hopefuls of tomorrow will enter the ring at the BBAG Yearling Auction. As at the spring meeting in May, there are no longer any coronavirus restrictions. So nothing stands in the way of another racing festival at Germany's highest-selling racecourse.
Over 1.3 million euros will be paid out to the active participants on the five race days (in the sequence Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday) - including the breeders' premiums. A total of six group races, three Listed races and two auction races stand out from the planned 49 races. Of course, attractive winning opportunities await all bettors thanks to high guaranteed payouts in the four-race betting.
Saturday, August 27, 2022:
67th Prize of the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe
On the opening day (Saturday, August 27), the focus will be on Grand Prix horses in the 67th Prize of the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe (Group III, 55,000 euros, 2,000 m). Schwarzer Peter, who finished second in the IDEE 153rd German Derby, could be competing here for the first time since his brilliant performance in Hamburg. Mansour, who finished third in the Grand Prix of the Baden Economy, is a great improvement.
Happy Birthday Mummy - 80 years of Alexa Gräfin zu Solms Cup
Within the eight races (first start is at 1:30 pm), the most important competition in the supporting program is a very special tribute to the Solms family to mark the milestone birthday of a grande dame of turf - the title: "Happy Birthday Mami - 80 Years Alexa Gräfin zu Solms Cup". The stayers' race (Listed race, 25,000 euros, 2,800 m) is considered a top attraction for the "marathon" horses. After finishing second in a similar race in Hoppegarten, Nubius could land a well-deserved success here.
Sunday, August 28, 2022:
152nd Casino Baden-Baden Golden Whip
The owner of the winner of Germany's most important sprint race, the 152nd Casino Baden-Baden Goldene Peitsche (Group III, 55,000 euros, 1,200 m), will receive a gold-plated whip engraved with all the winners since 1867. The highlight on Sunday, August 28, will not only feature one of the most coveted prizes in local turf racing, but also a great deal of prestige. An international line-up is also on the cards for 2022. Among others, the Swede Good Eye, who won the Silver Whip here in the spring, could be on course for gold. Namos is still fondly remembered as the 2020 winner.
Darley BBAG Auction Race
The Darley BBAG Auction Race (€102,500, 1,200 m) for two-year-old fillies is the second highest-paying race of the Great Week among the nine races on this day (first start at 1:30 pm). The owner of the winner will receive an impressive 50,000 euros. This could be Gestüt Ebbesloh - as the owner of the two-time winner Waldeza. The program is rounded off with a run for the Mehl-Mülhens Foundation's Young Rider Prize for young riders.
Wednesday, August 31, 2022:
149 Renate and Albrecht Woeste - Future race
One of the most important races in Germany for the youngest racehorses, the four-legged friends born in 2020, is the 149th Renate and Albrecht Woeste - Future Race (Group III, 55,000 euros, 1,400 m) on Wednesday, August 31, supported by the Honorary President of the German Gallop Association and his wife. Fährhof's Habana and Granada, who were brilliant on their debut, could be among the contenders here. Bodyman and See Paris, who won in France after their victory in the Cologne auction race, are also likely to be in the spotlight. A year ago, Rocchigiani, a stallion who has since also become a Group winner at Goodwood/England, won the race.
Prize of the BBAG Yearling Auction - Auction Race
As four races will be broadcast to France by betting multinational PMU on Wednesday, the first of the expected eleven races will start at 11:35 am. In the supporting program, the BBAG Yearling Auction Prize - Auction Race (€52,000, 2,400 m) for three-year-olds will see a reunion with the former Derby favorite Tünnes from Peter Schiergen's stable.
Coolmore Stud Baden-Baden Cup
The Coolmore Stud Baden-Baden Cup (Listed race, €25,000, 1,800 m) for fillies is another highlight class. Here, the Schiergen stable could present the Hoppegarten winner Techno Music, among others.
Saturday, September 03, 2022:
T. v. Zastrow Mare Prize
The big final weekend will kick off on Saturday, September 3rd, with a first-class race for three-year-old and older fillies, the T. v. Zastrow Stutenpreis (Group II, 70,000 euros, 2,400 m). Amazing Grace, the runner-up from the Dallmayr Grand Prix, the serial winner India and the Henkel - Preis der Diana runner-up Wagnis are possible candidates.
Wackenhut Mercedes Benz Fillies Cup
The card on the second Saturday is expected to include nine races (first start at 1:30 pm). On Ladies Day, the ladies will also be challenged in the Wackenhut Mercedes Benz Fillies Cup (Listed race, €25,000, 1,400 m).
Stud Etzean Winter Queen Trial
In the Etzean Stud Farm Winter Queen Trial (€10,000, 1,600 m), two-year-old mares will rehearse for the Winter Queen Prize at the Sales & Racing Festival on October 16.
Sunday, September 04, 2022:
152nd Wettstar.de Grand Prix of Baden
The absolute highlight of the Big Week is of course the 152nd Wettstar.de Grosser Preis von Baden (Group I, 200,000 euros, 2,400 m), which is being sponsored for the second time by Germany's most important horse betting broker, on the final Sunday, September 4. This could be the eagerly awaited clash between last year's winner and Arc winner Torquator Tasso and the current Derby winner and Dallmayr Prize winner Sammarco. It is already certain that Torquator Tasso will be ridden by Lanfranco Dettori, one of the world's best jockeys. Alter Adler is still well known from his success in the Badische Wirtschaft Grand Prix. A reunion with the multiple Group I winner Alpinista would bring an additional attraction to the top event.
Brunner - Oettingen race
But that's by no means all. Twelve races are expected to be held on the final day (first start at 11:15 am), the first four of which are part of the PMU card in France. In addition to the Grand Prix, Baden Galopp will present another group race, the Brunner - Oettingen-Rennen (Group II, €70,000, 1,600 m), which will be held under the patronage of contract furniture manufacturer Brunner for the first time. In 2021, the Spaniard Rodaballo prevailed, who could be at the start again, as could Best Lightning, who won the 44th Kronimus Badener Meile.
The President of The United Arab Emirates Cup
The Arabian thoroughbreds will compete for 40,000 euros in The President of The United Arab Emirates Cup (Group II, 1,600 m).
Supporting program
In addition to top-class sport, Baden Galopp also offers a varied supporting program for all visitors away from the green turf.
The after-race parties, which were very well received at last year's Big Week and also at the previous spring meeting, will take place again. The BravoHits Club Tour will be stopping off in the Gontard Garten at the end of the first race day (27.08.) and invites you to linger beyond the race day.
On the first Sunday of the Big Week (August 28), the hat competition, which has already been held this year in Hamburg, Munich, Düsseldorf and Berlin-Hoppegarten, will take place at the Iffezheim racecourse in cooperation with DONNER & REUSCHEL. A hat jury will be looking for and judging the most beautiful and creative hat creations among all participants. Fantastic prizes await the winners.
On Tuesday evening (30.08.) the traditional soccer match of the active team will take place on the Iffezheim sports field. Kick-off is scheduled for 18:00.
After the exciting game the day before, the supporting program on the third race day (Wednesday, 31.08.) goes into the next round with the second After Race Party. Last year's celebrated band Bow Tie Willi will turn the beach area at the main entrance into the perfect party zone from 6 pm.
As every year, the BBAG yearling auction takes place on the Friday before the Grand Prix of Baden (September 2nd). It starts at 10 am.
The traditional Ladies Day will take place on the second Saturday (03.09.) - visitors can look forward to a competition, a champagne happy hour and numerous other activities and surprises. There will also be an after-race party in the Gontard Garten following the last race. The party band Die Grafenberger will provide the right atmosphere.
Finally, the mobile band The Speedos will ensure a good mood on the day of the 152nd Grand Prix of Baden (04.09.).
As always, the little ones will also be well catered for. Horst Jochim will be on site with his play mobile on all race days and will make children's eyes light up, while parents can chill out in the neighboring beach area.
Finally, there will also be an innovation for the bettors. For the first time, self-service terminals will be in use at the racecourse to enable faster processing of bets.
