Seguro Causes an Upset at the Japan Racing Association Trial
Baden-Baden-Iffezheim, June 6, 2026 (MH) – A surprise in a key prep race for the IDEE 157th German Derby, set to take place in one month in Hamburg-Horn: Seguro (6.7:1), trained by Andreas in Suborics in Cologne for the Simply Red stable owned by Rastatt-based tax consultant Thomas Schäffer (also treasurer of the Baden Galopp Support Association), won the Japan Racing Association Derby Trial on Saturday at the spring meeting at the racetrack in Baden-Baden-Iffezheim with French jockey Benjamin Marie. In this Group III race over 2,000 meters, with a purse of 55,000 euros, the Romanised son—who had already shown respectable form and was also bred by his owner—emerged as the successor to last year’s winner, Juwelier from France, in front of 11,200 spectators.
Seguro, whose second victory in his sixth career start was rewarded with €32,000 in prize money, easily pulled away from his five opponents by a length and a half down the stretch, even though he drifted slightly to the outside. It was an impressive performance by Seguro, who could potentially make it into the Derby field via a late entry, as he currently has no other commitments.
Yacomo from Iffezheim was absolutely outstanding
The underdog Yacomo, trained by Fabian Xaver Weißmeier in Iffezheim, put in a surprisingly strong performance to finish second, delivering by far his best showing in his very first start of the season. Waladares, who had led for much of the race, easily held on to third place. The disappointment of the race was the hot 1.6:1 favorite Lommi, who was too far out of contention in last place and could only manage fourth. Neither All Square nor the Polish guest mare Akira Yasha provided any spark.

Benjamin Marie (Seguro’s jockey): “He’s a very likable horse, and the 2,000-meter distance suited him well. He drifted a bit to the side at the end. Softer ground would have been even better. But of course, I’m over the moon.”
Andreas Suborics (Seguro’s trainer): “He’d been training really well and had a perfect race today. Seguro usually needs soft ground. Of course, we’ll sleep on it and see what we do, but he’ll probably run in the Lotto Hamburg Grand Prix and then the Dallmayr Prize.”
Sibylle Vogt (Yacomo’s jockey): “That was a spectacular performance. We had ideal conditions and a smooth race. He showed great speed, and that was in his first start of the season.”
Fabian Xaver Weißmeier: “Wow, I’m speechless. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to race yet this year; otherwise, a win might even have been possible. He’ll be my first starter in the German Derby.”
Sarah Steinberg (Waladares' trainer): “He’s gotten back into shape since Munich. We’re very pleased. Now he’ll come home first, and then we’ll discuss what to do next.”
Henk Grewe (Lommi’s coach): “We wanted to come out strong, but obviously we didn’t plan on falling so far behind. It’s hard to make up that much ground from this position in Baden-Baden.”
