Lordano triumphs in the Tattersalls Grand Prix after a lash finish
Baden-Baden-Iffezheim, June 01, 2025 (MH) - Hardly any of the 11,500 spectators on Sunday's final at the racecourse in Baden-Baden were able to stay in their seats: The electrifying finish in the Grand Prix of Tattersalls (Group II, 70,000 euros, 2,200 m), sponsored for the first time by the English auction house, was hard to beat in terms of excitement. In the very last few meters, Lordano, now unbeatable at Germany's premium racecourse at his third start, gained a minimal advantage of one head over the favourite Wilko and Queimados, who had been going like the winner for a long time, for Ittlingen Stud owned by furniture entrepreneur Manfred Ostermann from Witten and trainer Marcel Weiß (Mülheim).
Great ride by Leon Wolff
For the first time, Leon Wolff was in the saddle of Lordano, who had finished second in this top class in Cologne in 2024 following the weather-related cancellation in Iffezheim. And the only 21-year-old jockey from Cologne did an excellent job on the six-year-old Adlerflug gelding. Until well into the run-in, it looked as if the Fährhofer Queimados, who was back for the first time after a very long break, or Wilko, who stormed up the outer rails, would be successful. But as the distance increased, Lordano, who is known as a top stayer, became more and more compelling and secured the 40,000 euro prize money for Gestüt Ittlingen. It was his ninth win in his 16th appearance, his fifth on the group level. Lordano's winnings now amount to 287,575 euros. This immediately made him forget his recent bad luck at Hoppegarten.
Wilko with bad luck
Wilko was unlucky this time, as his jockey Thore Hammer-Hansen lost the whip at the last and seemed to have already won. Nevertheless, it was another top performance by the Grewe protégé, who at least relegated Queimados to third place by half a length, who could hardly have done better after almost a year out. Rashford also stayed on well and held on to fourth place, although he also had to accept an upset, as did Quest the Moon and the second Ittlingen-bred Narrativo, who was completely undervalued in eighth and last place. Mansour faded after temporarily taking the lead. The former Brazilian Derby winner Cold Heart was never a factor. The English guest Certain Lad had been deregistered as they had obviously hoped for softer ground.
VOICES:
Leon Wolff (jockey Lordano): "I actually wanted to let him gallop more, but then another race came up. He showed a super heart and is a fantastic horse."
Marcel Weiß (trainer Lordano and Narrativo): "The race was absolutely perfect for Lordano. The jockey did a very good job. Lordano needs long distances. We will now take him to Hamburg for the Hansa Prize. Narrativo, on the other hand, had a very unfortunate race and was clearly beaten."
Manfred Ostermann (owner Lordano and Narrativo): "For Lordano, today's victory was a real compensation for his recent bad luck at Hoppegarten. He took advantage of the gap at the right moment. He is a great stayer. Narrativo unfortunately got completely bogged down."
Henk Grewe (trainer Wilko): "Unfortunately his jockey lost the whip in the final, otherwise he could have won."
Eduardo Pedroza (jockey Queimados): "He ran super. I briefly thought he might win, but he got a bit tired at the end after the long break."
Andreas Wöhler (trainer Queimados): "He needed a lot of time, that was a top performance in only his fourth start. Now we are going to Hamburg, where the course should suit him even better."
Marian Falk Weißmeier (coach Rashford): "He was a bit eager on the road, but kept up until the end. We'll probably skip Hamburg with him and go to Deauville."
Sarah Steinberg (trainer Quest the Moon): "He ran a huge race, especially as he was hampered. Otherwise he might have finished fourth."
Adrie de Vries (Jockey Narrativo): "My horse came into the straight in a good position, in the fairway of Lordano, but then he was seriously disturbed and the race was over."
