Is the future Derby winner running in Iffezheim?
Baden-Baden-Iffezheim, June 2, 2026 (MH) – Will the next Derby winner take to the track at Baden-Baden-Iffezheim on Saturday? That is the key question on June 6, 2026, the second day of racing at the Spring Meeting organized by Baden Galopp. Four weeks before the most important horse race of the year on July 5 in Hamburg, the Japan Racing Association Derby Trial, under the patronage of one of the world’s largest racing organizations, will once again serve as a top test for the Blue Ribbon.
In 2023, Fantastic Moon—who would later win the Blue Ribbon—triumphed. In 2024, Augustus took the title and went on to finish third in the Blue Ribbon. A year ago, the French horse Juwelier added his name to the list of winners.
In this Group III race over 2,000 meters, with a purse of 55,000 euros, trainer Henk Grewe and owner Eckhard Sauren appear to be well represented by Lommi (T. Hammer-Hansen), the runner-up in the WETTSTAR.de – Bavarian Classic in Munich and winner of the Ratibor Race in Krefeld. He is likely to be the clear favorite here.
Iffezheim-based trainer Fabian Xaver Weißmeier will also be in the mix with Yacomo (S. Vogt), owned by the Andiamo Racing Club. The serial winner Akira Yasha (M. Abik) is traveling in from Poland. However, the strongest opponents for Lommi—named after a former cult restaurateur in Cologne—are likely to be Seguro (B. Marie) and All Square (B. Murzabayev).
Up-and-coming talents and top-tier handicappers
Of course, the supporting program is also very appealing. Among the eight races (the first race starts at 1:30 p.m., with the gates opening at 12:00 p.m.), the highlight is the first race for two-year-olds in this region, the BBAG Badener Jugendpreis (€15,000, 1,000 m). Trainer Henk Grewe is known for bringing his horses to the track early. The mare Zauberflöte (T. Hammer-Hansen), whom he trains, already has racing experience from France, which could be an advantage. Even two young horses from Denmark are entering the starting gates here.
The four-horse accumulator bets in Races 3 and 9 each offer a guaranteed prize pool of 10,000 euros. There is also 10,000 euros to be won in the V4 bet (in Races 5 through 8).
The first race, a 2,000-meter handicap with a purse of 20,000 euros, features owner Martin Kronimus backing Klaudius (M. Cadeddu). However, this race also has a very special focus. It will be run under the title“F*ck Cancer Race,”and Baden Galopp is using it to draw attention to an initiative by Dana Diekmeier in support of cancer research. Details can be found in a separate press release, which will also be sent out today.
