Big Week from August 30 - September 07, 2025 in Baden-Baden - Iffezheim:
Geography is Germany's mileage star
Baden-Baden-Iffezheim, September 07, 2025 (MH) - Germany's best miler has been called Geography since Sunday, the final day of the Great Week at the racecourse in Baden-Baden-Iffezheim: The four-year-old gelding trained by Peter Schiergen for Stall Hanse (with Moritz Becher) managed the feat of winning his fifth group race in the 92nd Brunner-Oettingen-Rennen (Group II, €70,000, 1,600 m). After another triumph in the Fritz Henkel Prize in Düsseldorf, last year's third-placed rider effortlessly took this Iffezheim highlight under Andrasch Starke.
In third position, the 4.5:1 co-favorite had a perfect race when Penalty was unstoppable on the move and led by a huge margin ahead of Glady Tiger, who was actually intended to set the pace. On the straight, last year's winner Penalty was soon on the retreat, as was his stablemate. Geography took the lead almost without a fight and was the winner of the 40,000 euro prize long before the finish line.
Two and a half lengths behind Geography, the Englishman Short Final, the winner of the Kronimus Badener Meile, made his presence felt in second place, and the mare Quebec was even better in third. Best Lightning passed the completely disappointing favorite Zabiari in fourth place, as well as Glady Tiger and Penalty, who were both in a bad way.
VOICES:
Andrasch Starke (jockey of Geography): "What a performance. There was a lot of speed. We had a very good position and my horse marched on and on in the home straight. He broke away easily and playfully."
Peter Schiergen (trainer of Geography): "The race was ideal for us with the over-paced race. As a gelding, Geograpgy has become very balanced. He can go from the front, but can also be led. The Prix de la Foret on the Arc weekend in Paris is his goal."
Andreas Suborics (trainer of Quebec and Best Lightning): "Both horses had a good race. It was faster than expected. Quebec had a huge moment. Best Lightning ran better than in his two previous starts in Iffezheim. He had a lot of catching up to do. I am very happy with both of them."
Stall Lintecs Blue Lips (6.6:1) showed a clear improvement in form in the opening 2,200 meter race for three-year-old fillies. The lady, prepared by Andreas Suborics in Cologne, was confident early on under Hugo Boutin against Adina and Lucky Shawna.
Young rider on the road to success
A very successful big week lies behind the young rider Esentur Turganaaly Uulu. The 26-year-old celebrated his fourth victory with Ittlingen's Lorella (2.4:1) from Marcel Weiß' stables in Mülheim, who was completely superior in a 2,400 meter handicap III. He secured the fifth coup in the final 1,800 meter handicap on Henk Grewe's newcomer Shining Yellow (4.2:1) ahead of Poldi's Liebling, King's Crown and Belisaire.
Home win through Gabriele Gauls Ericson
With a hussar ride to home victory: Ericson (23.4_1 outsider), owned by Gabriele Gaul, the wife of Baden Galopp President Peter Gaul, provided a start-to-finish hit for the Iffezheim training center under Thore Hammer-Hansen in a 2,800 meter level II, because Gordan Batistic is responsible for the gelding, who gave Almenkönig and Leonello no chance at all.
Next goal for Sarah Steinberg
Not only the group victory with Quest the Moon in the Prize of the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe in the colors of the Salzburg-Erben stable will be remembered for a long time by trainer Sarah Steinberg during the Grosse Woche. In a 2,200 meter level II, the Munich-based trainer managed to score her fourth meeting win with Noble Breath, and as with Quest the Moon for the recently deceased Hans-Gerd Wernicke. With great reserves, the 15.5:1 outsider under Sean Byrne managed to turn the tide against Principe, who is co-owned by Klaus Allofs. World Vision and Vaisseau Fantome completed the four-horse betting, which brought 4,269.7:1 euros.
"Noble Breath was a bit unhappy with the ground recently, because she actually needs a soft track," Sarah Steinberg revealed. "We wanted to give her an interim start here before we compete with her for Black Type in the fall. I would like her to have a nice place as a broodmare at the end of the year."
Piechulek for the sixth time
Jockey Rene Piechulek also put in a terrific meeting. The 13.6:1 outsider Go Girl Go from Jan Korpas' quarters in Halle in a 1,600 meter level III meant his sixth win this week. Red Nugget, Korfu and Artistic Mission completed the foursome with odds of 13,743.4:1 euros.
Things also went brilliantly for Thore Hammer-Hansen on Sunday, who celebrated victory number three in a 1,800 meter test on Asterix (5.9:1), ridden by Pavel Vovcenko.
Domestic betting turnover in the ten races on the final Sunday of the Big Week amounted to 937,151.33 euros.
