Big Week from August 30 - September 07, 2025 in Baden-Baden - Iffezheim:
The second color is number one: Park Wiedinger Egina surprises in the T. von Zastrow Mare Prize
Baden-Baden-Iffezheim, September 06, 2025 (MH) - Many of the 11,900 spectators had expected a triumph for Helmut von Finck's Gestüt Park Wiedingen in the T. von Zastrow Stutenpreis at the racecourse in Baden-Baden-Iffezheim on Saturday, but had primarily counted on the top favorite Santagada. But while she did not quite make it to the front in fourth place, the four-year-old Soldier Hollow daughter Egina, who is also trained by Peter Schiergen in Cologne for the successful Soltau stud farm, jumped into the breach. After a first-class ride by Leon Wolff, the lady, who started as a 10.7:1 outsider in the second color, followed up her victory in the Baden-Badener Hotellerie & Gastronomie Prize at the spring meeting with a bull's eye in this Group II test over 2,400 meters with prize money of 70,000 euros, which was once again under the patronage of the von Zastrow family.
Thrilling affair
From the penultimate position in a very tightly bunched field, Egina developed enormous reserves and fended off Nyra, who was following strongly on the outside, as well as North Reliance, who stormed up from last place and finished third in this race for the second time in addition to a fifth place. The thrilling course of the race is evidenced by the two neck gaps between the first three mares. After a moment of weakness, Santagada made another charge and was close behind in fourth, while Innora, who was leading on the way and was a little off the pace at the end because her rider obviously thought she was going to the other track, and Lady Charlotte played just as little of a role as the fading World's Best and the Iffezheim representative Tanami Starlet.
VOICES:
Leon Wolff (jockey of Egina): "She is an incredibly loyal mare who cantered very relaxed on the go. She made a real leap on the straight."
Peter Schiergen (trainer of Egina and Santagada): "Both mares ran well. Egina had a very nice race. She accelerated strongly and showed great fighting spirit. Santagada came back after a moment of weakness."
Helmut von Finck (owner and breeder of Egina and owner of Santagada): "I am very pleased with Egina's development. She has continued to improve. The race was ideal for her. Santagada didn't have such a good race, otherwise we might have been one-two."
Waldemar Hickst (Nyra's trainer): "The mare sold very well. She always gives her best. A race in Hanover or a start abroad are now a possibility."
Marcel Weiß (coach of North Reliance): "That was a very good performance. Our plan is set. We are aiming for a Group I race over 2,800 meters with her on the Arc weekend in Paris."
