German victory in the 151st Renate and Albrecht Woeste Future Race: Santagada sprints past the competition
Baden-Baden-Iffezheim, August 28, 2024 (MH) – Few of the 5,900 spectators had believed that the German national anthem would be played on Wednesday afternoon at the racetrack in Baden-Baden-Iffezheim following one of the most important races for two-year-old horses in the country. But the young horses trained in Germany settled the outcome among themselves in the 151st Renate and Albrecht Woeste – Zukunfts-Rennen (Group III, 55,000 euros, 1,400 m). In an incredibly thrilling highlight on the third day of the 2024 “Grosse Woche,” sponsored by the honorary president of Deutscher Galopp and his wife, Santagada—owned by Helmut von Finck’s Gestüt Park Wiedingen—triumphed as a 12.5-to-1 longshot under top female jockey Sibylle Vogt.
Starting from the very back of the seven-horse field, the daughter of the exceptional stallion Soldier Hollow—who sadly passed away recently—still outspurted all her opponents and crossed the finish line three-quarters of a length ahead to claim the 32,000-euro prize. Santagada thus maintained her perfect record after two starts. For Cologne-based trainer Peter Schiergen, the runner-up Dhitjari—who also closed in very strongly and was ridden by stable jockey Bauyrzhan Murzabayev—capped off a dream result. Turf Sumy, from Auenquell, also put up a strong fight to finish third.
In contrast, the clear favorite, Assertively from England, ran out of steam early enough while leading and finished only fourth, ahead of the French horse Supido—owned by soccer star Antoine Griezmann—which had also been expected to finish near the front. Balzarini and Let’s Attack had little impact on the race.

Sibylle Vogt (Santagada’s jockey): “It’s a dream come true to win this race with a mare like this. She had only raced once before and was up against some tough competition. I’m speechless.”
Peter Schiergen (trainer of Santagada and Dhitjari): “I was already quite confident in my horses and had hoped that both would finish in the top four. Both had continued to improve. Santagada’s previous win had been highly regarded, and Dhitjari is also a very good horse. While he could continue competing in auction races, Santagada is a good candidate for the Winter Queen Stakes or races abroad.”
Helmut von Finck (owner of Santagada): “I’d never won this race before. Of course, we had respect for the other horses, but I’d been hoping we’d get Black Type. The way she charged so strongly was incredible.”
Bauyrzhan Murzabayev (Dhitjari's jockey): "The mare was better than us today."
Marcel Weiß (coach of Turf Sumy): “Our goal was to finish in the top 3, and we achieved that. Everything is perfect. Next year, she’ll go even further.”
