PRESS RELEASE
Big Week from August 24 - September 01, 2024 in Baden-Baden - Iffezheim:
German victory in the 151st Renate and Albrecht Woeste Future Race: Santagada sprints past the competition
Baden-Baden-Iffezheim, August 28, 2024 (MH) - Only a few of the 5,900 spectators believed that the German national anthem would be played after one of the most important races for two-year-old horses in Germany on Wednesday afternoon at the racecourse in Baden-Baden-Iffezheim. But the youngsters trained in this country decided the 151st Renate und Albrecht Woeste - Zukunfts-Rennen (Group III, 55,000 euros, 1,400 m) among themselves. In an incredibly exciting highlight on the third day of the 2024 Grand Prix, sponsored by the Honorary President of Deutscher Galopp and his wife, Santagada, owned by Helmut von Finck's Gestüt Park Wiedingen, triumphed as a 12;5:1 outsider under top Amazon Sibylle Vogt.
From the very last place in the seven-strong field, the daughter of the exceptional stallion Soldier Hollow, who sadly retired recently, outraced all her opponents to win by three-quarters of a length with a prize money of 32,000 euros. Santagada thus defended her clean slate after two starts. For Cologne trainer Peter Schiergen, the runner-up Dhitjari, also a very strong runner-up and ridden by stable jockey Bauyrzhan Murzabayev, made a dream result perfect. Turf Sumy from Auenquelle also put in a strong performance in third place.
In contrast, the clear favorite Assertively from England had enough early on from the top and only finished fourth ahead of the French Supido, also expected further ahead and owned by soccer star Antoine Griezmann. Balzarini and Let's Attack were unable to make much of an impact.
VOICES:
Sibylle Vogt (jockey of Santagada): "It is a dream to win this race with such a mare. She had only had one start before and was up against strong competition. I am speechless."
Peter Schiergen (trainer of Santagada and Dhitjari): "I already had some guts on my horses and hoped that they would both finish in the top four. Both had continued to improve. Santagada's previous success had been greatly enhanced and Dhitjari is also a very good horse. While he could continue in auction races, the Preis der Winterkönigin or races abroad would be an option for Santagada."
Helmut von Finck (owner of Santagada): "I had never won this race before. Of course we had respect for the guests, but I had hoped that we would get Black Type. The fact that she tackled so strongly was fabulous."
Bauyrzhan Murzabayev (jockey of Dhitjari): "The mare was better than us today."
Marcel Weiß (coach of Turf Sumy): "Our goal was to finish in the top 3, and we achieved that. Everything is perfect. She will go even further next year."
