Big Week from August 30 - September 07, 2025 in Baden-Baden - Iffezheim:
The super fight of the top favorite Enzian
Baden-Baden-Iffezheim, September 03, 2025 (MH) - He was considered one of the hottest favorites of the Great Week at the racecourse in Baden-Baden-Iffezheim and in the end this "penalty" was converted: Eckhard Sauren's Enzian (1.7:1), most recently fourth in the IDEE German Derby in Hamburg, found an ideal task in front of 6,500 spectators on Wednesday in the Prize of the BBAG Yearling Auction 2025 (€52,000, 2,400 m), which referred to the BBAG Yearling Auction on Friday. But trainer Henk Grewe's team had to sweat until the triumph, worth 25,000 euros, was perfect.
On the home straight, Thore Hammer-Hansen, who currently succeeds in almost everything, first looked for a gap, but in the end he was able to break Zauberkönig's resistance - by a wafer-thin margin after a photo finish with a head advantage. Asmira made up an enormous amount of ground after losing a considerable amount of ground at the start and overtook Walkover in third place. Local hero Bandida Estrellita had no influence on the decision.
See you again in October?
"Enzian has a lot of talent, but is still a little immature. He will have learned a lot from this race," said jockey Thore Hammer-Hansen. Trainer Henk Grewe explained: "He was a bit unfortunate in the middle of the straight when there was little room, but then it was still enough. Perhaps we will now head for the Group III race here in October with Enzian and then the Bavarian Grand Prix."
Koffi Kick - the pride of coffee king Albert Darboven
She is the great pride of Hamburg's coffee king and horse breeder Albert Darboven, and after scoring at Hoppegarten, six-year-old Koffi Kick (6-1) won her second Listed race in a row. In the Coolmore Stud Baden-Baden Cup (€25,000, 1,800 m), the daughter of Zarak, ridden by Leon Wolff, showed a great final sprint against Princess Valentina (trainer Axel Kleinkorres: "You can lose to a mare like that") and the outsider Stugardia.
"I knew what kind of horse I had under me. She always gives one hundred percent," said winning jockey Leon Wolff. Trainer Henk Grewe, who secured another highlight on the day after Enzian, said: "She needed some time this year as she was at stud over the winter. Now we want to achieve a group placing or a group win with her. Milan or Rome is the goal."
Anniversary for Smrczek
Düsseldorf trainer Sascha Smrczek scored the 900th win of his career in the opening 1,800 meter level III on the giant outsider Nightdance Giulia (22.1:1), who ended a long dry spell for jockey Nicol Polli.
A very talented three-year-old, Wittekindshofer Rosenflügel (6.6:1), trained by Andreas Suborics and ridden by Hugo Boutin, may have been seen in a 2,400 meter competition, which Laminaria and Saralina still managed to catch.
Premiere for Fabian Xaver Weißmeier
Trainer Fabian Xaver Weißmeier achieved his very first success on his home track in Iffezheim in a 2,800 meter handicap when Severin (P. Werder) caused a surprise ahead of Poliana, Sirius Red and Waldulm at odds of 18.5:1. The four-man bet was not hit. There will therefore be a guaranteed payout of 30,000 euros (incl. jackpot of 10,175.21 euros) on Sunday.
The 1,800 meter level II ended in a thrilling finish, in which Wladimir Panov narrowly defeated Anatara, New Diamond and Donner Earl with a box ride on Self Solution (10.1:1), prepared by Pavel Vovcenko for Gestüt Paschberg. The four-horse bet brought 20,000:1 euros. One bettor collected 10,000 euros with the quick pick.
The betting turnover in the ten races amounted to 498,450.44 euros.
Big final weekend starts on Saturday
The Great Week will continue with the start of the final weekend on Saturday, September 6, 2025. Nine races will be held on Ladies Day around the T. von Zastrow Stutenpreis (Group II, €70,000, 2,400 m). The first race will start at 13:30.
