The "Jeweler" takes the top honorary prize - Next French success in Baden-Baden
Baden-Baden-Iffezheim, May 31, 2025 (MH) - The top events at the spring meeting at the racecourse in Baden-Baden-Iffezheim remain firmly in the hands of the guests from France: After Short Final's success in the Kronimus Badener Meile on Thursday, the Marseillaise was also played after the Japan Racing Association Derby-Trial (Group III, 55.000 euros, 2,000 m), the Marseillaise was played in front of 9,600 spectators on the hot and sunny Saturday - thanks to Juwelier, who took home a minimal lead after another class ride by the top jockey Adrie de Vries, who acted as if unleashed, in this Derby preliminary test sponsored by one of the largest racing organizations in the world.
Juwelier, a three-year-old son of Wootton Bassett owned by Hajro Jusufovic and bred in Ireland, had previously won a race at Fontainebleau in three starts for the son/sire/trainer team of Alessandro/Guiseppe Botti in Chantilly. Now he scored his first group win after a hussar ride by Adrie de Vries before heading to Hamburg for the Blue Riband. The "Flying Dutchman" soon took the lead and pulled away from his five rivals by up to ten lengths. At the start of the straight, Juwelier seemed to be in a bit of trouble on the outside, but he rallied once again and fended off the late and dangerous final attack by the favorite Path of Soldier with a short head. The reward: 32,000 euros in prize money.
Path of Soldier almost made it
Path of Soldier literally flew up and almost made it, he too remains in the conversation for the race of the year. Next Mine looked to be more than third on the outside for a long time, which was also true of Eagle Emblem in fourth. Aquaman only finished in last place behind Zafirelli after a malfunction.
VOICES:
Adrie de Vries (Jockey Juwelier): "The race was very fast, but it wouldn't have done any good to wait with him. He had some problems at the start of the straight, but that was our luck, because it allowed him to catch his breath and catch his breath. I knew at the finish that I had won."
Alessandro Botti (trainer Juwelier): "Today was a test for the German Derby. As Adrie de Vries is a top jockey, we left the tactics to him. Everything went really well."
Peter Schiergen (trainer Path of Soldier): "He got up to speed a little too late, but he ran a very strong race and remains on course for the Derby."
Waldemar Hickst (trainer Next Mine, Eagle Emblem): Both horses sold well. Eagle Emblem had a big jump. We don't know yet whether Next Mine will go into the Derby."
