The Grand Finale: Serial Winner Lordano and Other Horse Racing Stars in the Badische Wirtschaft Grand Prix
Baden-Baden-Iffezheim, May 31, 2024 (MH) – What a finale on Sunday, June 2, 2024, to cap off the Spring Meeting at the racetrack in Baden-Baden-Iffezheim. Baden Galopp presents a showdown among the four-legged stars in the Grand Prix of the Badische Wirtschaft (Group II, 70,000 euros, 2,200 m). The race will determine the successor to last year’s winner, Northern Ruler. In 2012, Danedream, the German wonder mare, secured victory in this highlight race.
This year’s edition is also teeming with top-class horses: Leading the pack is the aforementioned favorite, Lordano (A. de Vries), who is being prepared by Marcel Weiß in Mülheim for Gestüt Ittlingen, owned by furniture entrepreneur Manfred Ostermann. The five-year-old gelding’s progress across a wide range of distances has been phenomenal. He has turned seven of his nine races to date into victories, winning four races in a row, including three Group races. He has already distinguished himself twice in Baden-Baden: in December 2022 in a Class III handicap and last year in the Baden-Baden Steher Cup (Listed race). With tremendous fighting spirit, the son of Adlerflug most recently claimed the Carl Jaspers Prize in Cologne, where he also left his current rivals in his wake.
A Big Rematch
Mr Hollywood (L. Wolff) is the 2023 Derby runner-up, who finished second here in the 2023 WETTSTAR.de – Baden Grand Prix, ahead of Straight (E. Pedroza), who is also competing in this race. In his 2024 season debut, he won a Listed race at Hoppegarten against Derby winner Fantastic Moon, before finishing fourth behind Lordano in Cologne, a result that fell slightly short of expectations. Every drop of rain improves his chances. Third place in Cologne went to Group I winner Tünnes (A. Starke), who led for much of the race and is owned by Holger Renz, an ambulance service entrepreneur based in Cologne and Baden-Baden. After a long layoff, his comeback was quite promising.
Other seasoned Group-level horses include last year’s runner-up Best of Lips (H. Boutin), Petit Marin (T. Hammer-Hansen)—whose jockey is the son of former Iffezheim trainer Lennart Hammer-Hansen—and Mansour (M. Abik). Rounding out the eight-horse field is Napolitano (B. Murzabayev), a former Derby hopeful.
Charity Drive
Once again, the race day is themed “Baden Business Meets Herzenssache.” The partners of the Baden Business Grand Prix support the nonprofit organization “Herzenssache.” This children’s charity, in which Südwestrundfunk (SWR) also participates, is dedicated to helping disadvantaged children and young people in Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, and the Saarland.
Casino Baden-Baden Silver Whip with Short-Distance Aces
The packed program for the final Sunday in Iffezheim includes eleven races. The first race starts as early as 11:15 a.m., since four races will be broadcast to the approximately 13,000 betting outlets of the French betting giant PMU.
One of the highlights of the supporting program is the Casino Baden-Baden Silver Whip (Listed race, 25,000 euros, 1,200 m), which is once again likely to serve as an important test for the Casino Baden-Baden Golden Whip during the “Grosse Woche.” Zerostress (B. Murzabayev) delighted his large group of owners with his victory in the Casino Baden-Baden Golden Whip and now aims to win “silver.” Danelo (M. Abik) from Ittlingen has been a top-class sprinter for years and recently made a strong showing in a similar race in Hanover. A strong field of twelve horses makes this race incredibly exciting.
A First for the Siepenblick Stable: A Derby Trial
The Stall Siepenblick Derby Trial (15,000 euros, 2,400 m) is making its debut. Owner and breeder Lothar Grabe established the only preparatory race for the Blaues Band over the same distance required for that race, and has come up with something very special as the prize: the owner of the winning horse can choose one of two original paintings (oil on canvas) by the recently deceased horse painter Klaus Philipp. The estimated value of each of these one-of-a-kind pieces is approximately 6,000 euros. Gabriele Gaul is pinning her hopes here on Ericson (A. de Vries), who is trained locally by Carmen Bocskai.
In a race for the Mehl-Mülhens Foundation's Young Talent Award, talented riders under the age of 30 are invited to compete. There will also be a race as part of the Fegentri World Championship for Lady Riders.
Unique Betting Attractions
Of course, Sunday is also a day of celebration for all the Wetters.
The V4 bet is offered three times. A payout of 20,000 euros is up for grabs in the 6th race, and 10,000 euros each in the 3rd race and the final 11th race. A payout of 10,000 euros is available for the V4 bet in races 7, 8, 10, and 11.
