Press release:
Spring Meeting from May 26-29, 2022 in Baden-Baden - Iffezheim:
Baden-Baden/Iffezheim, May 29, 2022 (MH). Only very few had expected this: Silver for Sweden was the motto after the Casino Baden-Baden Silver Whip (Listed race, €25,000, 1,200 m), the top sprint as the highlight of the supporting program on the third and final day of the meeting in Baden-Baden-Iffezheim. The seven-year-old gelding Good Eye (14.7:1 outsider) took the 15,000 euro prize money to the far north.
Together with Artista, Good Eye led right from the start under Shane Karlsson and had opened up a clear lead over his rivals early on. The Swede's triumph was never in danger and he completed the surprise by one and a half lengths ahead of the favorite Waldersee (jockey Eduardo Pedroza: "The race was 100 meters too short for him"), the Frenchman Baileys Blues (Thierry Thulliez: "I am very satisfied with this performance") and Danelo, who also seems to be better off on a slightly longer track.
Good Eye is owned by the Oldies but Goodies owners' association. "This is a group of very loyal people who have trusted me for a long time," said trainer Jessica Long, who prepares her horses in Klagerup. "It was my first success in Germany. We were already very happy with his last placing in Hanover. He had only worked slightly afterwards. The long journey should be worth it. Good Eye loves being on the road and competing in races." It is quite possible that the winner will be seen again in the Casino Baden-Baden Goldene Peitsche at the Große Woche, for which he now receives a free entry. Lillie-Marie Engels had to get out of Evangelista's saddle right at the start, but everything went off without a hitch.
Nerik still a derby hopeful?
At the start of the 10-race final program, Stall Nizzas Nerik lived up to the high expectations as the 1.7:1 favourite in the new wave opening race over 2,200 metres. From start to finish, Nerik, trained by Peter Schiergen in Cologne, dominated against Maximus and Macun. "He is a very good horse, but he needs everything to fit one hundred percent. That's why he ran with blinkers on. He has improved from race to race," reported champion jockey Bauyrzhan Murzabayev about the stallion, who still has a nomination for the German Derby.
Surprise for the young gallopers
For the first time this season, the youngest gallopers, the two-year-olds, met in the BBAG Badener Jugendpreis (12,000 euros, 1,000 m). In this traditional competition, almost everything was in favor of the favorite Zariza, who had a clear lead until shortly before the finish, but right on the line, the Amaron-daughter Sienna (9.2:1), who was put in with pinpoint accuracy by Marco Casamento, put her head in front.
"We had high expectations, the mare showed a great final spurt. I bought the dam at an auction in Deauville. We will now continue with Sienna in the Premio Primi Passi, a group race in Milan," explained Ralf Rohne, the trainer, owner and breeder of the winner. Zariza was unlucky to lose, but remained well ahead of third-placed Mister Hollow.
Leon Wolff in the lead among the young riders
The Mehl-Mülhens Foundation's Young Rider Prize is reserved for riders under the age of 30. In one round of this competition, Leon Wolff on Mon Mistral (odds 4.4:1) proved to have a good overview and overtook Feuerblume and Mr Mocha with the gelding from Michael Figge's Munich stables.
Many hits in the race of the meeting
The absolute betting race of the meeting was a 1,400 meter level III, as 60,000 euros were paid out here in the four-horse betting (including a jackpot of 20,000 euros). Despite a large field of 13, Woodking (3.6:10), prepared by Germany's best rider Sibylle Vogt for Hanover trainer Dominik Moser, was the favorite to win. This team easily saw off the outsiders Water Diviner, Saxone and Circuskind. The four-horse bet paid 5,209.7:1 euros. It was hit 29 times with a basic stake of 0.50 euros.
Memorial for Karl Kronimus
Karl Kronimus, entrepreneurial personality from Iffezheim and great supporter of racing in Iffezheim, was commemorated by a memorial, which went to Gestüt Etzean's Nandina (9.9:1) from Jean-Pierre Carvalho's Mülheim stable against Wellenbrecher and Spirit after a perfect start-finish division. The award ceremony was one of the most emotional moments of the day.
Family success
The Prize of the Municipality of Iffezheim (level II, 2,000 m) was a success for the Wöhler family, as The Conqueror (E. Pedroza, odds 3.7:1), who won ahead of Soul Dancer and Amaranto, was bred by the family and is also owned by the Wöhler racing stable.
10,000 euros for "Herzenssache e.V."
Great campaign on this day: the partners of the Baden Business Grand Prix donated 10,000 euros to the "Herzenssache e.V." campaign, which is supported by Südwestrundfunk. Projects in the region are supported here.
The daily turnover in the ten races amounted to 744,467.17 euros, 39.3 percent of which came from the outside betting. A total of 1,909,616.36 euros flowed through the cash registers over the three days of the spring meeting.
In a separate press release you will find all the information about the main event of the spring meeting, the Grand Prix of the Baden Economy.
